2026#30: Crude Shock Breaks Market Momentum
Nifty500 slips below key technical support as market breadth weakens, but Friday’s internals show early signs of selective buying.
Weekly Market Update: Week Ended July 24th, 2026
Indian equities had a difficult week, with all major indices ending in the red.
Nifty500 declined 1.8%, indicating that weakness was broad-based, though large-cap stocks bore a larger share of the pressure.
The biggest macro concern was the sharp rise in crude oil.
Technical Perspective: Nifty500
Daily Timeframe Chart
After forming a Higher High (HH), Nifty500 failed to sustain momentum and subsequently formed a Lower High (LH) - the first warning that buyers were losing control.
The latest decline has now produced a Lower Low (LL).
The immediate price structure has changed from an earlier HH-HL sequence to LH-LL.
Price has slipped below all key short and medium-term moving averages (10EMA, 20EMA & 50EMA) and the 50EMA has now begun to slope downward turning red.
Despite the weak headline indices, Friday’s internal data showed some improvement beneath the surface.
Weekly Chart
The weekly chart continues to show a larger corrective structure.
The rebound from the earlier major Lower Low (LL) produced a Higher Low (HL), but the recovery has so far failed to break the previous important swing high.
This week’s bearish candle reinforces the importance of that resistance.
What would improve the setup?
First positive step: reclaim the 50EMA.
Move back above the recently broken horizontal zone. A convincing breakout above the recent weekly Lower High would materially improve the larger structure.
Until then, the market remains vulnerable to renewed selling.
Mid and Small Cap indices
Technically, the midcap and small-cap indices are still trading around or marginally above their rising 50EMAs.
However, all three indices have fallen below their shorter-term moving-averages, showing a clear loss of near-term momentum.
The reason we track Nifty500 is because it represents over 90% of the free float market capitalization, making it a comprehensive barometer of market health.
Market Breadth
Nifty500 continues to retain its ‘Stay’ signal, with its 10EMA remaining above the 20EMA following the bullish crossover on June 16. The trend-following signal has not formally shifted into a full defensive mode, even though price structure and breadth have weakened.
Friday’s slight improvement in short-term breadth may indicate an attempt to stabilize, but one session is insufficient evidence of a durable bottom.
Market breadth weakened sharply during the week:
10EMA: 31% of stocks are now trading above their 10EMA, a fall from 39% last week, showing continued deterioration in short-term momentum.
30EMA: 42% of stocks are above their 30EMA, indicating that weakness is spreading into the intermediate trend.
50EMA: 50% of stocks are above their 50EMA, placing the market right at the critical threshold separating structural strength from weakness.
The correction is no longer limited to a few index heavyweights.

Trading & Investment Strategy
The market currently favors a selective, stock-specific approach rather than broad-based buying.
Swing & Positional Traders:
Prefer stocks showing clear relative strength, strong earnings/catalysts and tight price structures despite broader market weakness.
Avoid stocks already trading below key moving averages - weak markets tend to punish structurally weak stocks the most.
Prefer confirmed breakouts backed by volume and avoid extended or weak mid and small-cap stocks.
Risk Management:
Consider smaller position sizes until market breadth and the Nifty500 structure improve.
A reclaim of the Nifty500 50EMA, together with breadth moving back above 50%, would justify gradually increasing exposure.
On the downside, further Lower Lows accompanied by continued breadth deterioration would favor higher cash levels and tighter risk management.
Summary
Markets suffered a broad correction.
The key question next week is whether the Nifty500 can quickly reclaim its 50EMA. Failure to do so would keep the probability of further consolidation or downside elevated.
The coming week should be viewed as a test of whether Friday’s internal improvement develops into genuine market stabilization or merely proves to be a temporary rebound.
The market is sitting on a knife-edge support. Short-term participation showed a minor bounce on Friday, but the broader deterioration remains intact. With only half the market above its 50EMA, the coming sessions will be important in determining whether this is merely a temporary shakeout or the beginning of a deeper correction.
